Abu Dhabi aims for 100% water reuse by 2018

The emirate of Abu Dhabi has outlined plans to completely eliminate the dumping of treated wastewater into the environment over the next four years.

Currently, just under half of the wastewater treated by the Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) is disposed of into the environment, mostly into the Gulf around Abu Dhabi city. This has caused high levels of chemical and biological particulates in the water around urban areas.

ADSSC said that demand from agriculture in the emirate greatly exceeded the amount of wastewater treated and the biggest challenge was distributing treated sewage effluent to where it was needed. A plan to use treated wastewater to recharge natural aquifers was not pursued because of the distance between aquifers and wastewater treatment facilities.

The announcement was part of the new Water Resources Management Strategy created by the emirate’s water and wastewater authorities.
