Dublin water agency drops logo for one with big drop

Dublin-Get a drop. Get a new logo. Get more notice and respect.

A drinking water and sewage district in Dublin and part of San Ramon is dumping its 24-year-old logo for one that officials say will fit better with modern tastes and the space limits of digital messages.

The Dublin San Ramon Services District picked the new logo to represent the agency's three public services — a drop for tap water, and two swirling patterns to depict treated wastewater as well as recycled water for irrigation.

"We wanted simple, bold images that represent our services," said Sue Stephenson, a district spokeswoman. "One of the biggest reason we changed is because the old logo is not scalable in the world of social media, and modern electronic devices."

The 1989 logo resembling an old fashioned government seal had the district's name in lettering that are too small to read on smart phones and electronic devices, Stephenson said.

The old logo also is out of date, lacking a reference to water recycling, a growing part of the district's services. The new logo has a forest-green swirl to represent green lawns and shrubs irrigated with recycled water.

The new logo also has large images and no lettering, Stephenson said.

The district relied on homegrown talent rather than an outside contractor to create the logo.

Joyce Chang, a graphic artist and designer on the district staff, created several different versions that were whittled down to one after vetting by the public, district employees and finally the district board, which approved the new logo last month.

Stephenson said the logo will be introduced gradually, placed on district stationery and letterhead as old suppliers run out, and added to new uniforms and equipment as the old ones wear out.

The services district supplies drinking water to some 67,000 people in Dublin and the Dougherty Valley in San Ramon. The agency also treats sewage for 137,000 people in Dublin, Pleasanton and southern San Ramon.
