2013 Direct Potable Reuse Specialty Conference

The WateReuse Research Foundation and WateReuse California will host the 2013 Direct Potable Reuse Specialty Conference on November 7-8, 2013 in Newport Beach, California.

Potable reuse occurs in various ways throughout this country and the world. De-facto potable reuse, as noted in a recent National Academy of Science report on water reuse, occurs daily on rivers and other water bodies everywhere when water intakes draw raw water supplies downstream from discharges of treated wastewater.

Traditionally potable reuse projects have involved some type of advanced treatment that purifies recycled water prior to blending with surface water or groundwater in the environment to augment those supplies of raw water. This process is known as indirect potable reuse or IPR. De-facto and IPR include an environmental buffer between treatment and intake to a drinking water system.

However, the latest technology replaces the environmental buffer such that purified recycled water is blended with other water sources in a potable water pipeline before treatment or distribution. This conference will look at the regulatory issues, treatment strategies, operational issues, research initiatives, and public acceptance challenges associated with direct potable reuse (DPR).
