Under its Emerging Opportunities Program, the Water Research Foundation (WRF) has announced two new funding opportunities intended to advance direct potable reuse (DPR). The program allows WRF to provide co-funding through the Program for research ideas developed by its approved partner organizations.
The latest requests for proposals (RFPs) are:
• Assessment of Techniques to Evaluate and Demonstrate the Safety of Water from Direct Potable Reuse Treatment Facilities ($275,000) — Although implementation of DPR requires water entities to demonstrate the ability to deliver safe product water, there is no current framework that allows a water utility to claim that its DPR-produced water is safe. This project will equip utilities and regulators with a means of demonstrating the water’s safety.
• Blending Requirements for Water from Direct Potable Reuse Treatment Facilities ($325,000) — Water produced from DPR treatment systems can be introduced or blended with untreated water ahead of a treatment plant, with water being treated within a treatment plant, or directly into a water distribution system. This research is needed to better understand how and where to blend DPR product water into a water system to meet water quality and operational performance goals.
Proposals responding to these RFPs are due on 9 January 2014. Projects are expected to be completed, or all draft results developed, by the end of 2015.
